How to Use the Vector Outline Tool for Custom Fill Patterns
In DRAWings PRO XII, the Vector outline is a unique outline type that acts like an artwork object—it contains no stitches on its own. However, when placed on top of a Satin or Step-filled object, it converts into a customized fill pattern, automatically translating your drawn shapes into precise stitch penetration points.
This tool is exceptionally useful for achieving a satin look over large areas where standard satin stitches would typically be inappropriate or impossible to use.
Step-by-Step Guide: Applying a Vector Outline
1. Create your base shape Draw the main body of your design (for example, a large leaf) and set its fill type to either a Satin or Step object.
2. Draw your details Using your preferred drawing or freehand tool, create the outline shapes on top of your base object (for example, the interior veins of the leaf).
3. Convert to Vector Select the newly drawn top object and change its outline type to Vector.
- Result: You will immediately see the base shape divided into smaller satin parts perfectly following the shape of your vector line.
Understanding the “Form Fill” Option
The Vector outline type relies on a specific property called Form fill to dictate how stitches are generated.
- When Form fill is Disabled (Default): The only stitches generated will be along the actual outline of the vector fill and the outer edges of the base object.
- When Form fill is Enabled: The base object fills normally with its original stitches, except for the specific area enclosed inside the vector fill, which automatically becomes satin.
Advanced Design Combinations
You can easily create highly intricate and beautiful fill patterns by combining the Vector outline with other DRAWings PRO XII tools:
- Vector + Array Fill: Apply an Array fill to a shape, then change the outline to Vector. This projects a repeating, geometric satin pattern across your large step-filled area.
- Vector + Clone Editing: Use Clone editing on your vector shapes to seamlessly produce and adjust pattern variations across your design in real-time.
💡 Pro-Tips for Vector Fills
Monitor your maximum stitch length! Because the Vector fill tool creates a satin-like appearance over large expanses, you must pay close attention to the maximum length of the resulting stitches. If the generated satin stitches stretch too far across a shape, your embroidery machine may automatically convert those excessively long stitches into unwanted thread-trims. Ensure your vector shapes are spaced appropriately to keep stitch lengths within your machine’s optimal parameters.
