Coasters are practical and beautiful at the same time. I use them to protect furniture from ring marks and at the same time embellish a table setting. Use your imagination to make any kind of coaster or mug rug you like. It&#8217;s a fun project with which you may experiment with different <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drawstitch.com\/blog\/knowledge-base\/understanding-technique-selection-in-drawings-pro\/\">techniques<\/a>, make good use of any leftover stash and they make nice gifts too. If you hold the <strong>Ctrl <\/strong>key down while drawing you will get a perfect circle. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select the shape you have created and type 105 mm or 4.1 inches for the <strong>width <\/strong>and <strong>height<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enter 0 for X and Y to center the shape to the hoop.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keeping the <strong>Shape <\/strong>selected and click on the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drawstitch.com\/blog\/knowledge-base\/how-to-move-scale-and-duplicate-objects\/\">duplicate<\/a> <\/strong>button.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Now having the new shape selected, enter <strong>90<\/strong>% for Scale <strong>X<\/strong> or <strong>Y<\/strong> to create a circle that is slightly smaller than the original circle.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select the outer circle and remove the fill<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>From the stitches option of this outer liner select <strong>Double<\/strong>. These are the stitches that will sew the front and back fabrics together. Enable the view of the grid temporarily.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Add the flowers in the design<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Select the inner circle and click on the <strong>Array <\/strong>option for the outline.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select a <strong>Flower <\/strong>and proceed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Drag the mouse to make the <strong>flower <\/strong>about 20 mm (0.8\u201d) in size<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Set the <strong>offset <\/strong>to -10 mm(- 0.4\u201d) so that the pattern is set inside the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drawstitch.com\/blog\/knowledge-base\/digitizing-basics-the-running-outline-type-explained\/\">running<\/a> stitches and set the spacing to 2.0 mm or just enough space to fit 10 patterns.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Actually, any number of patterns can be placed, as long as they fit within the running stitch; here we have 10 repeats of the pattern.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Next, place an array to fill. Click <strong>Array<\/strong> in <strong>Fill<\/strong> Properties.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select a leaf and click <strong>Insert<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Drag the mouse to place a leaf diagonally within a 15 mm (0.6\u201d) square.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select <strong>Contour<\/strong> from <strong>Fill<\/strong> under <strong>Properties<\/strong>. (You can choose any fill you like, but here we will use the Contour.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Using the <strong>node editing<\/strong> tool, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drawstitch.com\/blog\/knowledge-base\/how-to-transform-designs-move-resize-rotate-skew\/\">move<\/a> the control handle displayed on the shape to adjust the leaves so that they are centered and well-balanced.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Once the array is in place, set the colors and stitches to add arrangements to the leaves and flowers. To do so, you need to separate the array into objects.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select the shape and click <strong>Separate to Objects<\/strong> under the <strong>Properties fill<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do the same for the <strong>outline<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Flowers <\/strong>and <strong>leaves <\/strong>can now be edited as their respective objects, and the original shape is displayed as artwork. The artwork outline and fill are not needed here so select the artwork and delete it.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Make embroidery adjustments in the flowers<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Arrays separated into objects are grouped. We will <strong>set one color<\/strong> for the <strong>flower <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drawstitch.com\/blog\/knowledge-base\/how-to-group-ungroup-design-parts-for-efficient-embroidery-layouts\/\">group<\/a><\/strong> and <strong>one color<\/strong> for the <strong>leaf group<\/strong>, so I will set colors at this point.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drawstitch.com\/blog\/knowledge-base\/how-to-group-ungroup-design-parts-for-efficient-embroidery-layouts\/\">Ungroup<\/a> <\/strong>the objects so that changes can be made to each object individually.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hold down the <strong>Shift <\/strong>key and select every other flower to place the outline and <strong>remove the fill<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Apply <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drawstitch.com\/blog\/knowledge-base\/how-to-use-satin-serial\/\">satin serial<\/a><\/strong> to the outline of the flower and remove the fill.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hold the <strong>Shift <\/strong>key &nbsp;down and select all the filled flowers and a pattern.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Set the Underlay.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Set the <strong>Length<\/strong> if you prefer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I believe that setting the length to 8 mm (0.3\u201d), makes the pattern of this flower look more like cherry blossoms,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>so I will set the length to 8mm (0.3\u201d).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Make embroidery adjustments in the leaves<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Hold the <strong>Shift <\/strong>key down and <strong>select all<\/strong> the leaves.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select the Sea waves 1 pattern.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Set the <strong>Underlay<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You may also set the <strong>Length<\/strong>, if you prefer. We found out that the pattern gets a more leafy effect when it is set to 8 mm (0.3\u201d), so I will set the <strong>Length <\/strong>accordingly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Last but not least, use the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drawstitch.com\/blog\/knowledge-base\/how-to-use-stitch-flow-to-control-stitch-direction-and-quality\/\">stitch flow<\/a><\/strong> to adjust the direction of the stitches so that the pattern looks perfect.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The design is now complete and we only need to set the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drawstitch.com\/blog\/knowledge-base\/how-to-use-auto-and-manual-sequencing-in-embroidery-software\/\">sequence<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Set the embroidery sequence<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If it is set to <strong>auto<\/strong>, click it to choose manual.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bring the running stitch last.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check the order of embroidery with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drawstitch.com\/blog\/knowledge-base\/how-to-use-slow-redraw-to-simulate-and-perfect-your-embroidery-designs\/\">Slow redraw<\/a><\/strong>. When you are satisfied with the output, send it to your sewing machine.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Create multiples coasters<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you want to make several coasters at the same time using a large hoop, then, select the design.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use the <strong>Rectangle array<\/strong> of the vertical tool <strong>Array<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enter the number of copies you want to make and move the control handles to place them in the hoop and then click <strong>Apply<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ungroup<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Move all running stitches <strong>to the end<\/strong> and rearrange them so that objects of the same color are embroidered together.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Embroider the coaster design<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We are ready to embroider now, so make sure you&#8217;ve gathered all the materials you need. We will need a piece of outer fabric 150 mm by 150 mm (6\u201d by 6\u201d) and 2 Pieces of fabric for the back at the same dimensions, 150 mm by 150 mm (6\u201d by 6\u201d). Additionally we will need standard material, like Stabilizer, Embroidery threads and Adhesive spray. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"676\" src=\"https:\/\/www.drawstitch.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/whatuneed.webp\" alt=\"What you need\" class=\"wp-image-278\" title=\"\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We will start by folding each of the back fabrics in half and then ironing them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hoop the stabilizer<\/strong> and place your front fabric to the hoop using an adhesive spray.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Open <\/strong>the design.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Set the bobbin and needle thread, attach the hoop to the sewing machine, and start embroidery.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When the embroidery is complete, detach the hoop from the machine, and place the back fabrics so that the creases of the cloth <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drawstitch.com\/blog\/knowledge-base\/how-to-weld-trim-and-intersect\/\">intersect<\/a> at the center by 10 mm (0.4\u201d).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Tape it<\/strong> to prevent the fabrics from slipping.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Attach the hoop to the sewing machine and press the <strong>start <\/strong>button to <strong>sew the fabrics together<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Detach the hoop from the machine and <strong>un-hoop the stabilizer<\/strong>. Tear off the stabilizer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cut the outside 5 mm (1\/4 &#8220;) off the seam with scissors. Make cuts at 5 mm (0.2\u201d) intervals<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pull the right side out and gently push from the inside so that the curve comes out neatly.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s done!! Use your imagination to make any kind of coaster or mug rug you like. It&#8217;s a fun project with which you may experiment with different techniques, make good use of any leftover stash and they make nice gifts too.
