That simplicity is why it works well as a digitizing exercise in DRAWings PRO embroidery software. You start with one circle and one line, and the rest comes from copying, reshaping and a handful of settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This post walks through the full spider web embroidery design from our video. It covers the 150 mm web for Halloween projects, the freestanding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drawstitch.com\/blog\/diy-christmas-free-standing-lace-tree\/\">lace<\/a> version stitched on water-soluble stabilizer, and a smaller 60 mm version that becomes a pair of earrings. Each one is used for a specific reason in this project, which makes it easier to remember than a list of menu names.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The design also has two uses. As a regular embroidery design it can decorate a bag, a pillow or a sweatshirt. With a change to the fill, it becomes freestanding lace that is embroidered on water-soluble stabilizer with no fabric under it. We build the regular version first and convert it near the end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Start with a circle that fits the hoop<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From the Tools toolbar, open the Shapes menu and select the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drawstitch.com\/blog\/knowledge-base\/how-to-add-customize-and-edit-ellipse-shapes\/\">Ellipse<\/a>. Hold the Control key on Windows or the Command key on Mac while you click and drag. The ellipse stays a perfect circle. Without the key you get an oval, and the radial lines we add later would not be spaced evenly against the outline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Switch to Selection mode and check that Proportional is on. Then set the Width to 150 mm. Proportional changes the height at the same time, so the circle stays round. With the circle still selected, click the machine icon on the main menu bar and choose Center to Hoop from the drop-down menu. This places the circle in the middle of the hoop, which gives you a predictable center point for the next steps. It also saves you from moving the whole design later, when it has many more objects attached to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A new circle comes with a fill and an outline. Go to the Used Colors bar and click the empty space above the white Fill color. That applies white to the outline as well. Next, click the X beside the bucket icon to remove the fill. What remains is a white outline only. That is what we want at this stage, because the circle is going to be the outer frame and the guide for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drawstitch.com\/blog\/knowledge-base\/how-to-create-spiral-fills-in-closed-shapes\/\">spiral<\/a> lines. The fill comes back later in a different form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Turn on clones and the grid before drawing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before you draw anything else, open the Edit menu and make sure Add New Objects as Clones is enabled. Nothing changes on screen when you turn it on, so it is easy to skip. It matters in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drawstitch.com\/blog\/knowledge-base\/how-to-use-step-fill-stitches-density-styles-underlay-and-gradient-blending\/\">step<\/a> where we fix the center of the web, because every copy we create will stay linked to the others. If you reshape one, they all change, and you see the result on the whole web right away. Enable it before you create the copies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then go to the View menu, show the Grid and enable the Snap option. Snap lets the cursor land exactly on the center of the circle and on grid lines. This keeps the first line perfectly vertical. That matters more than it sounds. The line will be repeated eight times, so a small angle error in the first one shows up in every copy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Draw the first radial line<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Start the Digitize tool and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drawstitch.com\/blog\/knowledge-base\/how-to-transform-designs-move-resize-rotate-skew\/\">move<\/a> to the center of the circle. Click once and the point snaps to the center. Drag the cursor along the Y-axis until you are just above the circle outline, then click again to finalize that section. To end the line, right-click and select End Shape. In our recording a double right-click also finalizes the line, so use whichever you are more comfortable with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The line runs from the center to the edge, and it is the only line we draw by hand. The radial lines are the supports of a real web, the threads that carry the load. In embroidery they do the same job: they give the spiral lines something to attach to, so the design holds together visually and, in the lace version, physically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Give the line a stitch type and convert it to an object<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Switch to Selection mode. The new line is selected. In the Outline Properties rollup, change the type to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drawstitch.com\/blog\/knowledge-base\/how-to-use-satin-serial\/\">Satin Serial<\/a> and set the Width to 2 mm. A basic outline stitches as a thin run of thread. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drawstitch.com\/blog\/knowledge-base\/how-to-digitize-satin-stitches\/\">Satin<\/a> Serial gives the line width and a closed, solid look, so it reads as a thread of web and not as a pencil mark. Then, in the Used Colors bar, click the white Outline color so the line takes the same color as the circle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Right-click on the workspace and choose Convert Outline to Object from the context menu. This turns the satin line into a shape object that keeps its stitch settings. The reason to do it now is that the array and the later node editing work on that object, and the shape can be reshaped as a whole instead of as a line with a property applied to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The grid has done its job at this point. You can disable it from the View menu or press Control\/Command + Shift + G.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Spread the line around the circle with Circular Array<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Keep the line selected and choose <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drawstitch.com\/blog\/knowledge-base\/how-to-create-circular-patterns-with-circular-array-tool\/\">Circular Array<\/a> from the Array section of the Tools toolbar. In the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drawstitch.com\/blog\/knowledge-base\/how-to-use-numeric-transformations-and-the-tool-options-bar\/\">Tool Options bar<\/a>, select the Full Circle preset, set the Step Count to 8 and click Apply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eight copies spread evenly around the center, 45 degrees apart. Because we enabled Add New Objects as Clones earlier, they are clones of the original, not independent objects. Eight is enough support for the spiral to read as a web at 150 mm, and it stays light enough that the design doesn&#8217;t turn into a dense <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drawstitch.com\/blog\/knowledge-base\/how-to-insert-and-customize-star-shapes\/\">star<\/a>. If you want a different look, the Step Count is the setting to change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fix the bulky center before it reaches the machine<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drawstitch.com\/blog\/knowledge-base\/how-to-use-zoom-pan-and-other-view-tools\/\">Zoom<\/a> into the middle of the web and you will see the problem. All eight lines start at the same point, so they overlap there. Every overlapping area gets stitched, which means a lot of stitches in a very small space. On the finished piece this shows up as a bulky, stiff spot, and in freestanding lace it can weaken the area or make the stabilizer harder to rinse cleanly. Click a node and press the + key on your keyboard. The new node is added at the midpoint of the curve segment before the selected node. Select that new node, right-click and choose Cusp to convert it. A cusp node holds a sharp corner, and we need one in the middle so the line keeps a hard point when we reshape its ends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now hold Control\/Command and click the two other nodes, the ones that are not in the middle. Use the arrow keys to move them away from the overlapping area. For smaller steps, hold Shift while pressing the arrow keys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the point where the clones pay off. The change you make on one line is applied to all the others, so you get a real-time preview of the entire array while you edit a single copy. The result is a triangle-shaped ending at the center that leaves space between all the lines. The lines no longer sit on top of each other, the stitch count in the middle drops, and the center stays flat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Build the spiral lines from the circle<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The capture spiral is the part of a web that catches things, and it is the part that makes the design recognizable. We make it from the circle we already have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Select the circle, right-click and choose Convert to Curves. Start the Node Editor, select all of the circle&#8217;s nodes and press the + key. A node is now added at every point where a radial line meets the circle. With those nodes still selected, right-click and choose Cusp from the context menu. This gives each meeting point a sharp corner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Press + again to add a node in the middle of each section you just created. Click on the workspace to deselect all nodes. Then hold Control\/Command and select only the smooth nodes between the radial lines. Right-click and choose Auto Smooth to convert them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hold Shift and drag the selection rectangle diagonally toward the center. The sharp nodes stay at the radial lines, and the smooth nodes between them are pulled inward. That is what creates the curved, sagging line between each pair of radials. A real web does the same thing: the thread attaches at a radial line and bends toward the center between the supports. Using cusp nodes at the attachment points and smooth nodes between them is a technique you can use for many other organic shapes, such as scallops, petals and waves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Repeat the spiral with Autoborder<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One curved line is not a spiral yet. We need repeated copies of it moving toward the center. Press Escape to go back to Selection mode, right-click and choose the Autoborder option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the dialog box, set the position to inside, the distance to 12 mm and the repeats to 4. Set the Type to Satin Serial with a Width of 1.5 mm and press OK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Autoborder builds each repeated line from the shape before it, so the spacing stays consistent all the way around. Doing this by hand would mean copying, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drawstitch.com\/blog\/knowledge-base\/how-to-use-numeric-transformations-and-the-tool-options-bar\/\">scaling<\/a> and aligning four times, and you would likely end up with uneven gaps. Set the type to Satin Serial with a 2 mm width. It is slightly thicker than the spiral lines and matches the radial lines. A frame with more weight makes the design look finished and gives the lace version a stronger edge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Using the design as is<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At this point the web is ready to stitch on fabric. You can use it as it is for Halloween creations. We used a version of it on our Halloween <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drawstitch.com\/blog\/how-to-make-a-drawstring-bag-how-to-label-and-decorate-it\/\">drawstring bag design<\/a>, which you can find in the Tutorials section of the Welcome tab. If you only need a decoration for a bag, a cushion or a tote, you can stop here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Convert the web to freestanding lace<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a freestanding lace spider web, the design is embroidered directly onto water-soluble stabilizer. After rinsing, the stabilizer is gone and what is left is a see-through piece of lace made only of thread. We covered the general technique in our Christmas Freestanding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drawstitch.com\/blog\/diy-christmas-free-standing-lace-tree\/\">Lace Tree<\/a> video, so check that one if you haven&#8217;t stitched lace before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the design, select the outer spiral frame again and go to the Used Colors bar. In the lower row, the one with the fill bucket icon, click the existing white color. This applies a fill to the frame shape as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now open the Fill Properties rollup and choose the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drawstitch.com\/blog\/knowledge-base\/how-to-use-netfill-for-freestanding-lace-embroidery\/\">Net Fill<\/a> type. In the Net Fill options, set the Cell size to 3 mm and the Angle to 30 degrees. A net fill is a mesh of open cells, so the shape holds together without becoming a solid block of stitches. The cell size controls how open the mesh is. The angle matters for a practical reason: if the net runs parallel to the radial lines, the two structures overlap and the lace looks cluttered. At 30 degrees the net crosses the radial lines at an angle, and the lines stay visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The web is now a freestanding lace spider web. You can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drawstitch.com\/blog\/knowledge-base\/how-to-transform-designs-move-resize-rotate-skew\/\">resize<\/a> it and embroider several copies, then use them as handmade Halloween decorations on windows, jars or a table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Resize the web for a pair of earrings<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The same design works at a smaller size. For earrings, first shorten the radial lines. Select them one by one while holding Shift, then hold Shift again and drag the selection rectangle diagonally toward the center. Shorter radials leave more room at the center, which matters once the web gets smaller.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Select the whole web and open the Selection Tool pane to resize it. With Proportional checked, set the width to 60 mm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A 60 mm web with the same number of spiral lines would be crowded, so adjust the design for the new size. Delete some of the spiral lines. If a line needs resizing, select it and resize it while holding Shift. Then reduce the inner line&#8217;s Width to create a gradual taper across the spiral lines. A taper keeps the center light, and a small piece has less room for thick lines. Finally, set the Net Fill Cell size to 2 mm. embroidery<\/a>?<\/strong> It is a design stitched on water-soluble stabilizer without fabric. When the stabilizer is rinsed away, the thread structure stays and forms lace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Why do the lines in the center of the web need editing?<\/strong> All eight lines start at the same point, so they overlap and create excessive stitching. Reshaping the ends with the Node Editor removes the overlap and avoids a bulky spot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What does Net Fill do in DRAWings PRO?<\/strong> It fills a shape with an open mesh instead of solid stitches.
